Dr. Jocelyn DeGroot earned her Ph.D. in Communication Studies from Ohio University in 2009. Josie’s research focuses on interpersonal communication, computer-mediated communication, and communicative issues of death and dying.

Her scholarship includes investigations of online voyeurism (Emotional Rubbernecking), Transcorporeal Communication, grief-related blogs, parasocial relationships, and relational continuity with the deceased. She has published in Family Relations, Journal of Family Communication, Communication Reports, Omega: The Journal of Death and Dying, Death Studies, Personal Relationships, Western Journal of Communication, Illness, Crisis, & Loss, Communication Research, and she has book chapters in Blogging in the Global Society and Contexts of the Dark Side of Communication.

Josie teaches a variety of communication courses, including interpersonal communication, computer-mediated communication, and communication theory at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Josie is a Professor and serves as the Assistant Chair for the Department of Applied Communication Studies.
